The slanderous Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is colluding with the corrupt Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to smear Catholics and conservatives, according to a report.
Jihad Watch Director Robert Spencer disclosed this collusion in a May 23 piece for Front Page Magazine. According to him, the SPLC “relentlessly smears legitimate conservative individuals and groups by labeling them as purveyors of ‘hate’ and lumping them in with the likes of the [Ku Klux Klan] and neo-Nazis.”
Spencer cited a May 14 article at the Daily Signal stating that “the FBI appears, at least briefly, to have joined the SPLC’s attempt” to smear Roman Catholics. The piece noted that Catholics who adhere to the church’s teaching on marriage and who celebrate the Latin Mass were the targets of the smear campaign.
Michael J. Matt, editor of the Remnant newspaper and producer of Remnant TV, expressed surprise after seeing his organization on a leaked FBI memo in February. His organization had been listed alongside several other groups he described as “defunct.”
According to Matt, the FBI’s list of “radical-traditional Catholic hate groups came from a 2007 list compiled by Heidi Beirich and Rhonda Brownstein – both from the SPLC. Brownstein serves as the current legal director for the group, while Beirich formerly oversaw the SPLC’s Intelligence Project and Hatewatch blog.
“There has been an explosion of traditional Catholic groups since [the late] Pope Benedict XVI brought back the Latin Mass,” he pointed out. “None of the new groups who are in positions of real influence are targeted in the memo.”
But that’s beside the point.
“That’s good, but the fact that the FBI is working with the SPLC and targeting law-abiding citizens because it disapproves of their religious beliefs is disquieting enough,” Spencer wrote in response to Matt’s point. (Related: Whistleblower says FBI plotting to CRIMINALIZE Christianity.)
Matt noted that the SPLC never cleans up its list of hate groups, and described the FBI’s short-lived decision to cite the Alabama-based civil rights group as foreboding.
“I have this suspicion that the SPLC was just laying the groundwork so that when the government gets far enough to the left, they can start using these resources like the [SPLC’s] hate map to silence people.”
Meanwhile, Spencer also recounted an exchange between Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Attorney General Merrick Garland back in early March. The senator asked Garland if the Department of Justice (DOJ) under him was “cultivating sources and spies in Latin Mass parishes and other Catholic parishes around the country.” The attorney general replied in the negative, saying that the DOJ “does not do investigations based on religion.”
“But it later came to light … that Garland was lying,” said the Jihad Watch director. “The feds did have informants in Catholic churches, snooping around and looking for evidence of that domestic terror threat that the Biden regime keeps insisting is the worst such threat we face today. Nor is there any indication that they’ve taken these spies out of the pews.”
“If there were a steady stream of terrorists routinely ‘radicalized’ in Catholic churches and going out to bring the wrath of the Immaculate Heart of Mary upon the populace, there might be some justification for this program,” Spencer noted.
“As it was, it was plain and simple harassment and scapegoating of Christians. [But] this criminal regime will not stop with Christians, either.”
