The Biden administration claims that a border island Texas reclaimed from cartel control is federal land, ordering authorities of the Lone Star State to clear out obstructions.
According to YourNews, the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) has asserted that Fronton Island in Texas’ Starr County is a property of the federal government. But the Texas state government recently cleared the island of cartel activity, secured it and cleared it of underbrush as part of its efforts to uphold border security.
The IBWC was established in 1889 by the U.S. and Mexico, with Washington and Mexico City having two separate commissioners overseeing their side of the border. The U.S. Department of State administers the IBWC’s American portion, while the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs administers the Mexican portion.
“IWBC asserts that Fronton Island is federal property and is under the jurisdiction of the IWBC,” wrote IBWC Principal Engineer Ramon Macias in his April 30 letter to the Texas General Land Office (GLO). “We respectfully request that the GLO remove the obstructions.”
In his letter to the GLO, Macias pertained to two sediment bridges installed by the Texas National Guard (TNG) on the island. The said bridges were installed after Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham – the head of the GLO – certified Fronton Island as state-owned property.
“Our respective survey office discussed ownership of the island between August 2023 and September 2023. In our review of the GLO’s submitted documentation, we cannot confirm when or how the state of Texas formally acquired Fronton Island. The IBWC asserts that Fronton Island became federal property between 1970 and 1978 pursuant to the 1970 treaty with Mexico.”
Aside from disputing the Lone Star State’s claim to the island, Macias accused Texas of trespassing on federal land during the clearing operation that ended the cartel’s use of the island. He then requested Texas authorities to submit documentation proving that Fronton Island is a state-owned property “within 30 days of the date of this letter.”
Macias’ letter appears to be a move by the Biden administration to acquire Fronton Island. Under President Joe Biden, the U.S. has espoused an open borders policy at the cost of public safety and national security. This also empowered Mexican cartels to use the island as a base for their operations.
But in October of last year, Mexican cartels lost a significant tactical advantage as state military units cleared the 215-acre island. The cartels had used the formerly brush-covered island for years as a staging area for human and drug trafficking. Unsurprisingly, authorities in Texas did not take too kindly to the IBWC’s request. “The Biden administration has had nearly four years to secure the southern border, but they have chosen to neglect the safety of Texas citizens. Fronton Island and the cartel operations that persisted there demonstrated a clear and present danger to our communities. Bombs, weaponry and the smuggling of humans and drugs have plagued this area of south Texas for too long,” said Buckingham.
“Texas has stepped up, and we have no intention of relinquishing our claim of ownership of Fronton Island. As long as the people in that far away U.S. Capitol continue to ignore the people who sent them there, Texas – and the GLO under my direction – will continue to do everything in its power to keep our families and communities safe.”
Lt. Chris Olivarez, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), said that “for decades, Fronton Island has been utilized by the Mexican drug cartels as a refuge when fleeing from rival cartels and the Mexican military. Still, it has primarily been used to facilitate transnational criminal activity involving human and drug smuggling.”
“With the authorization through Land Commissioner Buckingham, the state of Texas has taken over the island by clearing and fortifying it, allowing DPS and the TNG to gain operational control in preventing cross-border crime,” Olivarez added.
