Four retired military leaders who served with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz have slammed the Democratic vice presidential nominee as a “habitual liar” during an interview.
The four officers expressed their disdain in an interview with former Fox News and NBC News anchor Megyn Kelly on her program “The Megyn Kelly Show” that aired on Sept. 2. Their criticism centered on Walz’s fabrications about his military record and deployment to Iraq.
“He’s a habitual liar, he lies about everything. He lies about stuff that doesn’t make sense,” said Paul Herr, a retired command sergeant major (CSM) of the Minnesota National Guard. “He says all these things like, ‘I was a football coach.’ You were assistant coach and you were fired because of a DUI [charge] that you lied about being deaf to try and get out of whatever you were trying to get out of there.”
Thomas Behrends, also a retired CSM in the North Star State’s National Guard, called Walz a “military impersonator.” His remark followed Kelly asking her guests what they felt about Walz’s purported military rank.
“You know, this guy is a military impersonator with that. Like you said, he’s a retired command sergeant major. He said it so many times that it just makes a person sick hearing,” Behrends told Kelly. “The state of Minnesota said he can say he served as a command sergeant major, which he has never said … he blabs that he is a retired one.” (Related: 50 U.S. Armed Forces veterans in Congress denounce Tim Walz for lying about his military service record.)
“We have stolen valor [because] people make decisions that are cowardly. They come back and they try to live vicariously by robbing all the other soldiers of all the benefits and all the sacrifices,” Herr continued.
“I mean, it’s just one habitual lie after another. They keep piling up, and eventually you can’t present enough blankets to cover it up.”
Before being elected as Minnesota governor, Walz served with the Minnesota National Guard from 1981 to 2005. He was sent overseas only once, and not in a direct role.
Walz retired from the Minnesota National Guard to pursue his political career, managing to evade a potential second deployment to Iraq. Behrends took over Walz’s position and was sent to Iraq. Herr also decried Walz’s evasion during the interview, calling it “morally indefensible” and a “morale crusher.”
For almost 20 years, Walz has also claimed that he was a retired CSM. But in reality, he retired as master sergeant – a rank below. Walz has also claimed that he was deployed to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan during his time as a guardsman, something found to be another fabrication.
Moreover, the Minnesota governor also lied about carrying weapons “in war” when he was never deployed to a combat zone. According to Newsweek, the Harris-Walz campaign claimed he “misspoke” when he made the aforementioned comment. Even the Democratic vice presidential nominee himself attributed it to bad grammar and passionate speech.
“We were talking about in this case – this was after a school shooting – the ideas of carrying these weapons of war. My wife, the English teacher, told me my grammar is not always correct,” Walz said during an Aug. 29 interview. “The one thing I’ll never do is I’ll never demean another member’s service in any way. I never have and I never will.”
