Two of Israel’s most prominent human rights organizations, B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI), have published damning reports accusing the Israeli government of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Both groups, known for their rigorous documentation of human rights violations, presented extensive evidence of what they describe as a deliberate and systematic campaign of destruction. Their findings add to a growing chorus of international voices, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and United Nations (UN) experts, who have warned that Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide under international law.
In its report, B’Tselem, an Israeli NGO that has monitored human rights violations in the occupied territories for decades, analyzed Israel’s policies in Gaza alongside statements from senior Israeli officials. The group concluded that Israel is engaged in “coordinated action to intentionally destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip.” The report includes statistical data, testimonies from survivors and documentation of attacks on civilians, painting a grim picture of widespread devastation. Yuli Novak, B’Tselem’s executive director, described the realization as “deeply painful” but necessary. She emphasized that the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack, which killed around 1,200 Israelis, has been exploited by Israel’s far-right government to justify extreme measures.
Novak warned that Israel’s policies treat Palestinian lives as expendable, with civilians subjected to starvation, mass killings and forced displacement. She also cautioned that the same patterns of destruction are emerging in the occupied West Bank, raising fears that the violence could escalate beyond Gaza.
Meanwhile, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI), an organization of Israeli medical professionals, released a legal analysis focusing on Israel’s targeting of Gaza’s healthcare system. Their report argues that Israel’s actions fulfill the criteria for genocide under the UN Genocide Convention, which Israel has signed.
PHRI documented direct attacks on hospitals, obstruction of medical aid and the abduction of healthcare workers, concluding that these are not accidental consequences of war but part of a deliberate strategy to harm the Palestinian population as a group.
Guy Shalev, PHRI’s executive director, stated that the systematic destruction of hospitals and denial of medical care constitute a clear pattern of genocide. He stressed that as medical professionals, they have a duty to speak out against these atrocities, especially as their colleagues in Gaza work under impossible conditions to save lives.
The reports from B’Tselem and PHRI align with findings from other leading human rights organizations:
Moreover, Omer Bartov – a renowned Holocaust and genocide scholar at Brown University and a former Israeli soldier – has written in New York Times that after careful examination, his “inescapable conclusion” is that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians.
Bartov, an expert on mass atrocities, stated that he has “been teaching classes on genocide for a quarter of a century” and that he can recognize one when he sees one.
Data has confirmed the staggering scale of destruction in the Gaza Strip:
Both B’Tselem and PHRI have condemned the international community’s inaction, accusing world leaders of complicity through silence or support. The groups have also urged governments to use all legal and diplomatic tools to stop Israel’s assault on Gaza.
As the death toll rises and Gaza’s infrastructure collapses, these Israeli human rights groups are sounding the alarm. What is happening in Gaza is not just war – it is genocide. The question now is whether the world will listen and act before it’s too late.
